My Story
LA Cat
Osiyo! (Hello in Cherokee)
I call myself LA Cat. The heritage I come from is a unique blend of Native American roots and Hawaiian Island mysticism. The goal I hold in my heart is to inspire audiences to feel the connection within—that we are all one: one race, one planet, one Earth.
It is my wish that this message will leave an imprint, guiding us back to our roots, harmonizing with all living things on Mother Earth, and creating a happier world. Music is a way of life for me. I sing, write, and play music for the love of life.
Raised in Southern California, I have been fortunate to spend much of my time in the hills of Malibu and along the Pacific Ocean coastline, feeling a deep oneness with nature. The music I write is influenced by the mystical experiences I have in the natural world. My heart inspires my singing, and I hope to inspire others to connect with their true inner selves.
The style I love to play is Reggae, with a touch of Jazz, Folk, and World music. My Hawaiian-born father was a jazz musician who trained my ear while taking me to school in the mornings, always playing jazz on the car radio. My Auntie was a singing teacher, so music filled our family life.
The birds were my first band members—I learned so much from them. I would play my guitar, and we would all sing together. That’s when I began writing original songs. From there, my performances grew from Los Angeles clubs to tours in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand, working with great musicians who further influenced my songwriting style.
I studied vocals and percussion at the Los Angeles Music Academy and piano at Santa Monica College. I also hold a BA in Fine Arts and Dance, and later earned a certification in Animation with the wonderful assistance of the Southern California Indian Center and the United American Indian Involvement. As a dancer, I love to move on stage whenever I can put my guitar down, and I’ve taught Modern, Jazz, Ballet, World, and my own original dance style. A highlight of my dance career was being cast as “The Cat” in George Clinton’s Atomic Dog music video.
I want to share the message of unity in all my shows. My lyrics speak of social justice, love, truth, and the search for answers from within ourselves—for this is the source of our ultimate truth and connection to the Great Spirit. Nature is my greatest inspiration; her sounds, rhythms, and beauty are an endless source of music for me. I care deeply about today’s world, the future of our children, and climate change. It is up to us to make changes in our own lives and to help in every way we can. I respect our elders and believe their wisdom is too often overlooked. We must seek their guidance.
My heart’s voice comes through my lyrics, accompanied by guitar—acoustic or electric. I have recorded three albums: We Will Unite, Unconditional Love, and my newest, Circles of Life. I also composed the score for the award-winning docu-memory War Brides of Japan. When performing live, I hire a band or use backtracks to accompany me.
My current undertaking is launching a business for music licensing and consulting called Sound Purrfection. It began as a spontaneous quest to collaborate with more musicians, including those of Native American heritage. My mission is to make Sound Purrfection a one-stop destination for music licensing and consulting for all types of projects. I believe music can make a difference for humanity, bringing us together—and I hope to contribute to that truth through my music and collaborations.
